For our Summer 2012 collection, we worked with British illustrator Adrian Johnson. We met up with Adrian at his studio in Lewes.
Over the years, Liverpool born Adrian Johnson has developed a unique and strongly identifiable body of work. His trademark economical, highly crafted, graphic work is constantly evolving, whilst always maintaining a healthy distance from current trends and passing fashions. Adrian’s work has already led to a prolific working career and a client list which includes Paul Smith, Adidas, Monocle, The New York Times and Unicef. He also has exhibited work in London, New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo. Attention to detail, humor and a simple timeless sophistication mark him out as one of the leading illustrators currently practicing.
The Stussy x Adrian Johnson collection is available now at: stus.se/KTyTLV

Massimo Vignelli (born 1931 in Milan, Italy) is a designer who has done work in a number of areas ranging from package design to furniture design to public signage to showroom design through Vignelli Associates, which he co-founded with his wife, Lella. He has said, “If you can design one thing, you can design everything,” and this is reflected in his broad range of work.
Vignelli works firmly within the Modernist tradition, and focuses on simplicity through the use of basic geometric forms in all of his work.

Typographer, graphic designer and businessman Erik Spiekermann has created timeless, influential and, yes, Meta-physical work over the past three decades.

Next to founding MetaDesign and FontShop, the latter being the first ever digital distributor of fonts, and designing more instant classic typefaces than any other, he has been recognized as an outstanding expert internationally as a lecturer and professor.

Listen to the design genius talk about new visual languages, design processes, the analogies of music and typography, and why we need better client culture in our latest Gestalten.tv video and you will easily realize why. Before heading to new visionary pastures, the bike enthusiast will make a short stop to receive the German Design Lifetime Achievement Award 2011 in February.

German Design studio Paperlux created this beautiful design and a unique deformable cover for Novum magazine. An awesome elaborate print job that you can discover on the making-of video showing the production process for this November Novum cover.

Paperlux created the design in tandem with Print Arena, Jürgen Jeurink—die cuts, and EMAG GmbH paper finishing—lamination. The final covers were finished in six different color schemes after 48,000 print passes with 140 punch cuts per issue. The resulting cover, inspired by the ideas and concepts of Richard Buckminster Fuller, is pliable along its cuts within the grid of the geometric design, inviting play and interaction.

In our second film, we meet writer turned knife maker Joel Bukiewicz of Cut Brooklyn. He talks about the human element of craft, and the potential for a skill to mature into an art. And in sharing his story, he alights on the real meaning of handmade—a movement whose riches are measured in people, not cash.

A little over a year ago we started branding our good friend Konrad as the newly minted FreshSox. One of the final elements of his brand to get produced was his business card. During the design process, we knew we wanted to go the letterpress route. The tactile quality, vibrant colours and overall aesthetic has always appealed to us. We recently met Nicholas Kennedy at Trip Print Press (tripprintpress.ca)here in Toronto. We were so wowed with his work and amazing shop from day one, we found each subsequent visit was getting longer and longer. It’s the kind of place you don’t want to leave. It was a perfect storm of opportunity to record both the process of this new brand coming to life and the inner workings of a truly amazing letterpress shop.

In a field that is often criticized (and rightly so) as being crass, arrogant and following trends, Wieden Kennedy has long been one of the few agencies that approaches the craft of advertising with maturity, courage and ingenuity. John Jay has been a huge part of their dominance in recent years and his wisdom on this business many of us are engaged in is very much recommended reading. ‘The greatest thing we can offer is to be great listeners’

Kenneth Grange is Britain’s leading product designer, his prolific career spans over 50 years and he is responsible for designing some of the most iconic and familiar products and appliances that shape our daily lives. Kodak cameras, the silhouette for the Intercity 125 train, Kenwood food mixers, Parker pens, and the re-design of the London black cab are just some of his well-known designs.

In 1972 Grange, together with Alan Fletcher, Theo Crosby, Colin Forbes and Mervyn Kurlansky established Pentagram, a world renowned multi-disciplinary design consultancy. More recently, in the 1990s, Grange has produced distinctive designs that have become part of our landscape, from the Adshel bus shelter in 1993 to the Rural Post box for Royal Mail in 1998. Today Grange continues to work with British companies includingAnglepoise, furniture designer Hitch Mylius and fashion designer Margaret Howell.

This exhibition is Kenneth Grange’s first UK retrospective celebrating his work, design journey and the role he has played in making Britain modern. With unique access to the Grange archive, the exhibition includes over 150 products, prototypes, sketches as well as audio, photography and film.

‘Gulp’ is a short film created by Sumo Science at Aardman, depicting a fisherman going about his daily catch. Shot on location at Pendine Beach in South Wales, every frame of this stop-motion animation was shot using a Nokia N8, with its 12 megapixel camera and Carl Zeiss optics. The film has broken a world record for the ‘largest stop-motion animation set’, with the largest scene stretching over 11,000 square feet.

Also a film taking you behind the scenes on ‘Gulp’, Aardman’s world record breaking short film. It reveals what went in to making such a complex film outside and away from the controlled environment of a studio, and how it was shot using a Nokia N8.

Pen Type-A is a stainless steel replacement for the Hi-Tec-C’s cheap plastic housing. To us, the Hi-Tec-C cartridges deserve a more durable home. Check it out at Kickstarter Project.

More info from their Kickstarter Project page:

The design is minimal, the construction is super solid, and indestructible to protect and cherish these coveted ink cartridges. It has a dime screw on one end to allow for easy ink cartridge replacement. Its shaft is a solid smooth surface with no branding, no fancy grip or grooves, and just the right thickness and weight so it feels comfortable in your hand. The entire piece is milled and turned from a block of 304 stainless steel. The raw steel finish today is how it’ll look 50 years from now. This thing will last forever.

The pen slides slowly into its sleeve, which doubles as a ruler. The notches on the ruler are in cm and inches. An internal lip at the bottom of the sleeve protects the tip from getting shoved in any further than it should. The tiny amount of space between the sleeve and the pen creates an effect like a pneumatic cylinder, so the pen slides in slow and smooth.

Together with Rick Poynor, founder of Eye Magazine, Underware, Peter Bil’ak, Norm and Europa, Erik Spiekermann illuminated the field of conceptual type at the one-day conference in Copehagen on November 19.

For Erik Spiekermann, type is visual language: “Everything a company, a brand says about itself needs type. Shouldn’t that typographic voice be specific to the brand rather than bland and interchangeable?” Spiekermann displayed work for brands like Nokia, Bosch and Deutsche Bahn to show how exclusive typefaces work, how and why they’re made.

The conference “Conceptual Type: Type lead by ideas” is sponsored by the Danish Centre for Design Research and arranged in collaboration with The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of architecture and the type society Danish Faces.

He’s collected original Wim Crouwel posters for years. Now Tony Brook is the co-curator of the Design Museum’s current exhibition on the Dutch graphic designer which runs until July 3…

Tony Brook of Spin and also Unit Editions kindly invited us into his home to reveal the extent of his admiration of the work of Dutch designer Wim Crouwel: the walls of his house are covered in framed original posters by the designer. In this film, made in collaboration with Order, Brook explains his enduring fascination with Crouwel’s work.
